COMMON MISTAKE CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENTS DO IN MTECH ADMISSION

There are very great materials available for gate and I have browsed millions of them. But all of them are good for other branches and civil is kind of neglected. Being a civil engineer I intend to address it, so for other branches the information is not at all useful.

First starting with the categorization.

The most AVERAGE highly ranked (average of the highest ranker and the lowest ranker under same category) one is IIT madras. Due to its unique admission procedure a very high ranked guys get low preferred branches. For example in same class of water resources there was a 280 ranker as well as the 600 ranker in general category. The reason is quite visible in the admission procedure. The admission procedure is based on the gate SCORE only. So the people mainly give their options in ascending manner as 

Structures                             

Transportation         

Geotechnical           

Building technology and construction management

Environmental

Water resources      

However there may be interchanging between transportation , geotech and construction management. Also Between environmental and water resources. And this leads to difference in ranking. You may see previous year rankings.

Generally after top 100 rankers majority of the below 500 rankers come from south India. Hence whatever branch they get they will be more inclined to study in IIT madras. 

One of my friends had got about 280 rank had got water resources in first allotment in IIT madras which he denied. He was not called for any other branch. Could have easily got geotech or transportation on further up gradations. Moral-don’t deny a branch in first allotment. Go there and give about 30000 rupees fees. There is provision for up gradation only FOR ACEPTING CANDIDATES.

DATES DIFFERENT FOR DIFFERENT IITS

The main thing is that after gate- IIT madras is the first institute to give gate rank based admissions lists whereas around the same time other IITs like Bombay, Delhi would be giving only direct admission based short listed candidates which is very high rankers. Generally those with structures only accept that direct admission. Others getting transportation, geo will opt for written test to get structures. Others go IISC.

WITHDRAWAL

There is practically no way of losing 30000 rupees. Ample of time will be given to withdraw with 29000 rupees which is generally one or two days before class starting in all IITs. so if you get a branch and its not upgraded which is comparatively rare if your are deserving, then by the time you have gone into other IITs you would have definitely got better branch “withdraw” and don’t think it as hassle as its not.

MIS TRENDS

It is the recent ranking of the institute that has caused uproar among the engineering community. IISC, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are the only ones in the world ranking from India. However they are ranked based on whole of their programs in civil. As a civil engineer it is quite misleading.

I have presented the information that I have received from the alumnus who are my friends or friend’s friend.

The best way is to find from the alumnus in the respective institute

The most neglected IIT based on caliber is IIT roorkee. IIT roorkee is a very good college for civil engineers and is one of the oldest CIVIL engineering colleges. However due to poor performance of other branches, its low ranked.

The most hyped college is IIT Bombay and its excellence can be credited to other branches. the structures and transportation are two branches that are exceptionally good, with high placements. The geotechnical which is good branch unfortunately is one of the lowest in IIT Bombay among all the IITs. But make no mistake, the lowest seat filled were well below 300 rank in geotech.

PSU MYTH

Many people will go to PSU. It’s a myth. Actually the time PSU will appoint you like IOC or NTPC, you would have taken admission in MTECH. Only very high rankers will be called. So you would have to forget about 30000 rupees and then withdraw from course and take PSU jobs. Many of my friends have done that. A guy with rank as high as 17 had withdrawn from STRUCTURES IN IIT MADRAS after the classes STARTED to go to IOC. Since it’s after classes has started those seats will be vacant. MTECH MYTH

Unlike in other branches like computer science or electronics, MTECH in civil is definitely a class above the BTECHs

Sure placements?

If you are looking for a stable income and not higher studies then don’t go for MTECH.

The opportunities you get after BTECH is far far more than MTECH. Also you should be accepting to research and teaching as it’s integral to MTECH. It’s a myth of higher salary. The salary is a relative term. For a civil engineering BTECH fresher a salary of 15000 is considerable and you should take it, without going into IT with 30000 bucks per month as later on a civil engineer will excel in all spheres with experience. Don’t go to MTECH for improving salary, it won’t work.

            Just see the average salary detail of MTECH and BTECH in IITS for instance. It may be as high as 5 lakh for BTECH where as its only 4 lakh for MTECH.

            Also may websites say that going MTECH is other than teaching jobs. As high as 60% return to teaching after some time. You should be prepared for that. Teaching job is first as well as last job option for many.

TEACHING IS BORING

Well, to be honest, if you talk to your professors, many will find that they at least 60% thinks it is boring. You can never get the joy of a completed project under you with the teaching.

            Teaching alone is boring, but when combined with the research in thing which you are interested, then it is more satisfying than engineering alone. For that to happen, you should teach at quality institution. Utilizing your basic principle in field of engineering is far more satiating.

MESSING UP SIMPLE APPLICATION FORMS

Read application carefully. Messing up the application form, swapping DDs of different iits, should be avoided. take a notebook and write different iits dates application fees passwords and maintain it carefully. Check all the relevant options.

INTERVIEW vs DIRECT ADMISSION

interview is given to accommodate those people who had bad day during GATE exam. some of the very high ranker may fail in this area of interview.hence proper preparation is neccesary. among interview iit b and k give high importance to interview.however direct admission is only for high GATE ranker  IIT kgp asks for original GATE score card and many don't give thinking that in other iits they can't give interview without original GATE SCORE card.during my time 2013 attested photo stat was allowed.but better ask them before going.so among direct admission(M.KGP,G,ROORKEE), iit kgp and guwhati accommodates more low ranker. however one should not decide his choice preference based on last rank published as it may be after the spot admission.if you see iit M previous rank list btw highest ranker and lowest ranker,you will see that there is large difference.this may be because the last rank may be the spot guy.

DON’T SENT TOO EARLY OR TOO LATE.

Mistakes happen when you do both. Be sure to read the admission procedure of different iits.

For e.g. Iit madras,iit roorkee.iit kharagpur don’t conduct interview. So just put up the list as

Structures                             

Transportation         

Geotechnical           

Building technology and construction management

Environmental

Water resources

           

 Or your relevant preference. Don’t think your rank is not suitable or its too high for any branch other than structures. You never know.

For branches like IIT Bombay or Delhi or guwhati or Kanpur, it’s imperative that you must PUT first option branch according to YOUR GATE RANK.

Structures—within 100 or till maximum 180 rank

Transportation—within 400 ranker for Bombay, 500 ranker for Delhi and Kanpur

Geotech ---- within 500 ranker for Bombay 400 ranker for Delhi and Kanpur

Environmental engineering—about 1000 ranker

Water resources---about 900 ranker

Remote sensing—about 1500 ranker

Construction management (iit delhi& madras) ---- about 600 rank

These are the ranks around which my friends have got the branches. Please note that these are one of the lowest gate rank which means they have highly performed in interview. Also the intermediate rankers (600,700) should choose very carefully.

Also note that if my friend with 200 rank couldn’t get any branch in IIT Bombay because the first option was structures, then geotech, then water resources. However, geotech professors don’t like their branch in second preference, so what may be the rank they won’t give it to second preference unless it is direct admission. And so was the case with water resource professors.

However 300 rankers got because of their first preference in geotech.

ALSO CALLING FOR INTERVIEW doesn’t mean you have high chance. A ranker of 3000 are also called, just for fun.

SENDING TO SELECTED IITS

Even if you have high ranks you must sent you application to all IITS, even IIT guwhati, Hyderabad, gandhinagar. Don’t be lazy. You never know.

CHOICE VERSES BRANCH COMBINATION

It’s always confusion whether to chose good college or good branch. It really depends on individual taste. Here is a very rough outline of popular combination. I apologize for leaving out any combination beforehand.

·         Structures, aerospace, satellite technology with IISC

·         Structures with any IIT of A GRADE category (Bombay, Delhi, madras, Kanpur,   kharagpur, roorkee)

·         Any branch in IISC

·         Transportation in iit Bombay,delhi,Kanpur,madras

·         Geotech in iit madras, delhi, Kanpur, kharagpur

·         Structures in iit guwhati

.     structural dynamics(earth quake dept.) iit roorkee

·         Geotech in IIT Bombay

·         Transportation in kharagpur

·         Computer aided structures iit roorkee

   Structures from IIT Hyderabad

             

·         Construction management from IIT Delhi or madras
