MTECH OR PSU?

                                                MTECH OR PSU?

For GATE based PSU’S like IOC, NTPC, BARC, NALCO, MECON etc, you should know that the time you have completed medicals and have your appointment, you would already have been admitted to MTECH. So it doesn’t matter. You have to take FIRST MTECH and then PSU’s.

Only very high rankers will be called. So you would have to forget about 30000 rupees and then withdraw from course and take PSU jobs. Many of my friends have done that. A guy with 17 rank and with 120 rank has withdrawn from structures in iit madras and iit Delhi respectively. Since it’s after classes has started those seats will be vacant. Actually if you are very fervent about higher studies and research then only you should refuse those jobs. The main reason is that there will be little chance of you completing m.tech and getting higher jobs than the PSU’s.

But here is the catch. After 10 years generally all the PSU’s BTECHs will definitely take MTECHs or MBA. It’s because after some years when you are given higher end projects, your b.tech knowledge will be fading in that respect. Also after some time your position will be stagnate like anything. They will also write the prestigious IES.

I know a 40 year BTECH mechanical engineer from VSSC (ISRO) who was taking MTECH even after 15 years of service. On asking he said it was for his own satisfaction as after 15 years the projects he was dealing was proving to be very tough. Same is with civil engineers working in Dubai. IIT MTECHs are very much valued there.

A 30 year old IOC guy is pursuing structures in state college. It is mainly because of his contacts and experience, now he can get better job. His advice was to pursue m.tech after completion of b.tech itself as he is facing very much difficulty due to change in IS codes used.

For job sake MTECH is the maximum. Unless you stumble upon a really innovating and economically utilizable project, pursuing PhD with MTECH is not worth other than teaching and research. If however you get into teaching field with m.tech there is always provision for part time PhDs.

Also I have seen may people who take geotech in IIT get into L&T, leave it, and then do mba, then get in a bank of foreign countries. For those fickle minded guys it’s better to take psu. These are the guys who fall in iit’s brand name and then mess like anything.

In nut shell, if spoilt between choice of m.tech and PSU, take PSU and after some year you can do m.tech as m.tech have no age bar unlike PSU.

  1. Very nice article Shiju, Please continue to contribute and help fellow aspirants with your experience. Work harder on this blog and publish it in social networks so that maximum people can view it. Make this blog an exclusive meeting place for all civil engineers to discuss career options. Such websites hardly exist now. All the best. Rohit

    1. depends on which side you want to go.if you are talking about type of job you get,its similar to IAS for mba and IES for mtech, but to lower level.both are top post but have different duties.many people usually go for mba cause then they will be on top of food chain.people go to mtech to become experts in the field they like.mba is like vertical growth and mtech is like horizontal growth.its upon you to chose which path you have to follow.

  4. sir i agree with u,bt i have seen that officer on higher post in psu company(maharatna too)have mostly mba degree from reputed indian university rather than m.tech degree.highly experienced officer(25 year+ and they are in bod of company or they have served as a director of a dept)have mba from reputed iim's,fms, nitie, etc.only fewer of them(only in r&d)have m.tech degree.whats the reason behind it.

    1. your ans is in questions itself.mtech degree makes you an expert(or thats what they say) in particular field.its horizontal growth.getting in top position is not only hard work, but also smart work.generally people with mtech are not ambitious enough to get to top.they don't value top positions as those with mba and hence can't compete with them.its always your desire and not the degree that matters.

    1. they give study leave based on different criteria.for eg-BARC have specific roles.lets say they want geotech mtech.he might be a fresher from college and have good gate rank.barc will sponser his studies in any iits or iit they say.they might give some restriction on which guide to choose or if you can go to foriegn university through DAAD scholarship etc.here they need specific job people to fill in their needs.there might be other companies which don't give mtech pursuing oppurtunities to freshers.all psus encourage technology enchancement or leadership potential.they come up with different programs for it.in general a person can apply for study leave if he is has completed 5 years and after completion of study he has to work for some time like 3 years.this vary and i am just telling you an outline.please look for more details in authorised document of psus.

  7. Sir, if I want to do mtech from iit nd then I want join psu then wats d procedure? Coz I heard gate rank is compulsory for psu then again I hav to qualify gate aftet mtech?

    1. unlike mtech gate rank is applicable only one year for most of psu's.for mtech gate rank applicable for two years.so you have to again write gate after mtech.

    1. let me clear things a bit.very less student of total sample size of btech get 2 or three placements.depends on interest of students.core companies can never give as much money as software or banking.your interest level changes with the exposure of people you interact.some btech prefer ias, some ies, some go for mtech in same iit.similarly some opt for banking or software.for case of mtech, during two years of study, they get same exposure as btech or dual.they can do internship,go abroad for studies etc.speaking about my own branch i never felt duals who are studying with me are getting more opportunities.many companies come which is open for all.if you are able to crack their test, then you also get same opportunities as btech.this is true for established companies.start ups and other non core companies need freshers. mostly because they need to give training to students and condition them for work they have never faced like finance or software. mtech sometimes don't have that flexiblity and that is why they don't go and some companies don't ask for them.many companies have open profile for mtech, dual and btech. however very less mtech apply for them.so the reason is not because of
lack of opportunities but the interest level.
