COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF IIT IN CIVIL MTECH

Review of different institutes

Undoubtedly the most prestigious institute in India to pursue ME/MTECH is IISC.

GOOD side

Many directors’ quality academicians of IITs and expert professors all over India are from here only. Whenever a core branch problem of national importance arises in India these are the guys first sort after by the government.
They get international level exposures and even though the placement is pathetic, you will within 10-20 years be the top expert in your field undoubtedly in the country. Here the branch doesn’t really matter as the placements are very poor, but you will be acknowledged well in Indian academicians. So basically research oriented institute,
If ever an IIT BTECH would be interested in pursuing higher studies in MTECH in India it would be IISC. The quality is still undiminished because of highly meritious teaching
methodology.

IISC is the best-if you are interested in research
After graduation most of them are –
·         Board member of prestigious research institute of India.
·         Scientist of high caliber
·         Directors in IITs
·         professor in IITs, which is very prestigious or more
·         in foreign universities which is respected as well as handsomely rewarding.
·         Well known engineers which is comparatively quite less.
·         Professor or HOD in under 50 ranked famous colleges

Flip side

Normally for civil top branches such as structures, aerospace satellite technologies are filled within 15-20 rank. Other branches take up to 60-70. So the IISC is for only those within 100 rank guys to think.

The main problem is unlike IITs here a strong fundamental is prerequisite. Even if you get top rank in GATE it doesn’t mean you have a strong fundamental than guys with lower ranks. It’s seen that those people with low rank like about 2300, (eg. my friend) recently got selected in IES and is currently working and those with high rank in gate won’t make it to last level.

I had also come across the story of a guy in mechanical engineering who got top rank, getting admission into IISC and later before completing even one year he withdrew and again wrote gate and went to IIT Kanpur. Reason-he couldn’t cope up with the math in IISC and was fed up with torture and his lack of fundamentals. Can’t validate this story however, as this was told to me by a professor and me myself don’t know.

GOOD SIDE
IIT Bombay has been on top engineering colleges in India consistently. The world ranking is also in its favor. Also the toppers in IIT JEE psychologically prefer IIT Bombay over other IITS. Being in Bombay gives many research and job opportunities that is lacking in other parts.you may see previous cut off.
Transportation branch is considered best in all IITS. Structures is also good. Placements quite less for other branches. Environmental and water resources are okay. A placement of 80% is claimed here for civil engineering MTECHS.

FLIP SIDE

geotech is less preferred here among all the IITS. But make no mistake, the lowest seat filled were well below 300 rank in geotech. A very high ranker and comparatively low ranker in GATE can get in due to interview and written test. A rank as low as 900 in general have fetched seat in water resources and still less ranker for environmental engineering. It varies year to year. Choosing the first branch in according to your rank is crucial here. Here you have to forecast unlike IIT madras where you just have to give the list of preference in usual preference order.

GOOD SIDE

One of the prestigious institutes in INDIA. Infrastructures are slightly better than other IITs in civil branch. A much respected institute particularly in UAE, Singapore.

FLIP SIDE

IIT madras is for high gate scorers only. By not giving interviews even low preference branches are highly ranked compared to kharagpur and roorkee which follow same principle with a difference that they announce late.
Placements are marginally less compared to Bombay and Delhi.
So the people mainly give their options in ascending manner as

Structures
Transportation
Geotechnical
Building technology and construction management
Environmental
Water resources

However there may be interchanging between transportation , geotech and construction management. Also Between environmental and water resources. And this leads to difference in ranking. You may see previous year rankings.

Generally after top 100 rankers majority of the below 500 rankers come from south India. Hence whatever branch they get they will be more inclined to study in IIT madras.

Like IIT Bombay IIT Delhi has been on top engineering colleges in India consistently. The world ranking is also in its favor. Being in Delhi gives an added advantage of countries capital. Hence this is the placement hub. You may see previous cut off.

GOOD SIDE

All branches are okay geotech branch one of the best among all IITS.

FLIP SIDE

A small campus. However being in Delhi offsets it. Research needs more boosting.

GOOD SIDE
The king of research institutes in India after IISC. A good campus with good city makes it ideal hub for research. The environmental engineering faculty qualifications are excellent. Best for environmental engineering.

FLIP SIDE

Kanpur has tough interview among Bombay and Delhi. Math is addition subject to be studied for interview here.

GOOD SIDE
The institute with most MTECH programs, most number of students, it is arguably the most populated among all IITs in India. It has been in the top list Indian ranking system but lost up in world ranking. It is good for transportation engineering especially pavement materials.

FLIP SIDE
Being the biggest among all IITs also makes it campus centric place with nothing much outside the campus. Also an average among topmost IITs, for civil engineering branch.

GOOD SIDE

The most neglected IIT based on caliber is IIT roorkee. IIT roorkee is a very good college for civil engineers and is one of the oldest CIVIL engineering colleges. However due to poor performance of other branches, its low ranked. Placements are pretty decent and WILL probably increase more.

FLIP SIDE

It’s considered lowest among the A grade main IIT’S. Also conversion of it into IIT has still its impact. Generally neglected among the high rankers except structures, which is good as well as bad. A late merit list announcement further deteriorates the condition.

GOOD SIDE

A beautiful campus and still progressing IIT. Among the major A list IITs and still in top 10.

FLIP SIDE

Structures are good, no information about other branches. Last in A grade IITS. Generally neglected by the top rankers except structures. Low placements add to the woes.

GOOD SIDE

Students with rank as low as 400 have got structures and as low as 660 have got geotech. Environmental can go as low as 1500 during 2012,but 2013 it was under 200 for structures and 500 for geo. An IIT which is placed at metro and the speediest growing iit among the new ones.

FLIP SIDE

Temporary campus, low placements. Even structural MTECH don’t have good review from peers for placement, but there is good reviews for the faculty. A developing IIT, with still to be accepted for higher MTECH. Still better than lower NIT’S.

    1. depends on what is your interest. If technical job is your interest, then go IES rather than psu ,later you can definetly come back and do mtech after working 5 years,BUT this time as a sponsered candidate. If job is not immediate preference, but you are oriented towards research then go for mtech.Frankly speaking, job prospects after btech and mtech in civil is almost the same, but in mtech you will go in more specialised job of your field, like design field, research field or teaching field.

  4. Sir, I wanted to ask whether to go for structures at IITB,K,D or IISC bangalore? I'm not sure whether i want to continue in research field or not. Like If I change my mind after 2 years of study and want to go for a job then definitely IITs would be a better option and if I choose IISC then I'll have to stick to the research field forever? Please clear my doubt. Thanks! :)

    1. The fact is that MTech don't enhance your designing skills(as we are speaking structures here). They enhance analysis which was not dealt rigorously in btech level.Any iit you go,this is the fact. There is a misconception that by taking mtech in iit you will be able design a big structure.on the other hand you will be given tools to do that on your own, unlike in btech you were given the whole procedure.
Every iit you go,they don't encourage much for job.they want you to do research.but its less compared to IISC.there are people placed in good companies in IISC also. But better companies will come at iit b,d or k.In matter of toughness in curiculum, its generally told that first IISC,andIIT K, IIT B,IIT D,IIT M.however it depends lot on profs. As new ones are continously comming and old ones are retiring, its tough to predict. If job is your prime requirement, better go IIT D.you can study ias ies or any job you want, however the Profs. should not have a hint of it,else IIT D will be hell on earth. If placement is your prime motive,it varies all year but iit b,d are good bet.
Now what i have said above is debatable as they are told by my friends studying there about structures. In IIT kgp,the situation is decent placement, but more importance to analysis of structures,FEM and very little practical application.the students here prefer PSUs than companies that come to campus.almost 99-100% placement for every one who have passed or met eligibilty criteria all year.salary may not be that high as one may expect.
iit guwhati is the one lagging much among all iits.placement is quite less compared to other iits. The teaching also is not very encouraging as told by my friends studying there.

    2. Thanks Sir. I am a student of NIT ROURKELA btech final year in civil. Placements here are horrible for core branches except for mechanical. Non core like many finance and IT companies are coming which are paying 3-5 lpa. I don't want to go in those sectors. I want to do a core job and if possible in R&D sector. My friends told me to go for MS. But I cannot pay for the fees without scholarships which ,now-a-days,are very difficult to get. Therefore, I'm thinking of either doing some job here for sometime and then go for MS or do Mtech from IIT and if things go well I'll go for a PHD in some US university. If you can help me a bit, then I shall be highly obliged. :)

      Delete
    3. if core job is your preference, write GATE and many companies are there if you get high rank.the best however is to try for ES.I am not sure about core research job opportunities in India for btech civil.

In higher studies,if PHD in US is your final aim,try some job and go MS+PHD.But be warned of making PHD decision quite carefully.it takes almost 3-4 years, and should not be taken in spur of moment.Even for mtech also, its phd vs job dilemma. If PHD is not your primary aim,its better to do Mtech in IIT as its cheaper and almost equivalent to MS in US.You can land decent job if in structures or go research in that area if mind changes.

However,if you are not very sure what you want to do in first place(ie job or higher studies),its better to go job and after that think whether its suiting you or not. Many friends presently studying with me have job experience in core.after job experience you will be more clear and make more independent decision.

  5. Sir I am a student of be final year and i am interested to pursue for Construction Management as a PG course.I have applied for GATE this year.Sir please can you tell me which IIT provide a good course(Delhi or Madras).I have also applied for NICMAR so can you guide me and give comparative analysis for construction management from NICMAR and same from this two IITs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Frankly i have no idea, but one of my friends told me that among NICMAR and IIT madras,IIT madras is better.Don't know about IIT d.
In NICMAR about 10 lac expenditure for course completion. In IIT madras its cheap. Also companies comming are decent, but it depends on your luck.
recently in one of interview i met this guy from IIT m construction management AIR 76(during his admission time and is long time ago passout).he was attending scientist post interview with me for about 20,000 rs.however he runs coaching center in chennai for about 1 lac per month.he told placement was less during his time but has now improved.
In gate my friend's classmate had got in iit m construction management.he had close to 300 rank and that too in final most allotment.so if you want CM in IITs high rank is necessary.

    1. the selection rank varies year to year.iit delhi, kanpur, bombay have interview.so fill the preference correctly.with 1000 rank its better not to apply structures as first preference.my rank was around 500 and i got call only for env and water from delhi.in iit kgp my seniors lowest rank in transportation was around 300 and our batch it is the highest rank and lowest being mine.so you can see the variability.you can look for other branches like applied mechanics or rock eng. if you have interest only in delhi.and if selected for interview never tell them that you are preparing for ies or psus.tell them you are interested only in mtech.in roorkee after two three rounds you have chance.also apply for earth quake dept.in roorkee.iit kanpur interview has higher weightage and good chance to get in water or env., if prepared well.look up the previous last rank details.droping a year is entirely your decision.infact you should consider your placement, your desire to work in field or academic area.

    1. Ravi, the admission depends on the demand of a stream and how many people are applying.it cannot be predicted what you will get until you try.it always vary year to year.since iit r takes through direct admission, there is nothing much you can do for now. now you should concentrate on preparing well for interviews in iits where interview is conducted.don't worry about rank.sometimes it vary way beyond imagination even for general cateogory.that is why last rank of iits conducting interview are not revealed.however they are exceptions and not a rule.tryng hard will give results.

    1. if you are general the most possible chance is in iit k.if you do written well, interview well, and geotech is your first option then there is possibility of getting in.then comes iit roorkee and guwhati.d and m is bit tough.iit b usually considers interview seriously.hence put geo as first preference and apply,do interview well and there is possibilty.

  14. Please tell if there is a chance of getting structures coure in iits. My gate rank is 882 and score is 692. I have preferred structures as first prefernce the geo , followed by water resoure and transportation. If my preference is structures then will they call me for interview as my rank is not enough to get in this stream or if structures is filled then will they call me based on my second , third preference or they will cancel my name for interview based on my first preference. Please do reply as i have applied in almost 9 iits

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. if you are general, the chance to get in iit with strucutures is low.they won't cancel your name anywhere.you preference is good for iits which offer direct admission like m,kgp, roorkee, guwhati.but it was not good decision to apply structures as first option for interview conducting iits like b,d,k.they will of course call you for interview for other options and even structures in bombay,k. generally no professor want their subject to be considered as second option.however,if you perform very good in interview for second option, then there is chance in iit k.but very few cases students are considered for third or fourth option(interview cases only).in iit d,they generally give a high cutoff for interview itself.you should now prepare very hard for interview and prove yourself.the general procedure applied to call for interview is that they will give a specific cutoff for all branchs.highest for strutures followed by rest.those clearing cutoff is called for interview.then they will evaluate if you are eligible for branch based on rank and interview.you are called in a iit to give multiple interview.genrally iits restrict interview oppurtunity for any two options based on cutoff.there is a good boost if your rank is approprite for appropriate branch and that branch is your first option.there are students who got in iit like b and k with much lower rank than average branch rank because of their interview performance.interview performance matters.

  17. hi friend ,

I was reading your blog completely and only when i finished reading , i noticed the "about me" section . I was so happy to see a CETIAN doing this kind of blog . Am a final year civil engineering student from CET . :)

Wrote gate 2014 and could manage only a gate score 523 , rank 3700 . gpa- 8.31 . It was due to encouragement of one among my teachers that i decided to give options for 2 or 3 iits atleast . felt ok with the last cutoff for iit kharagpur last year (A ray of hope actually...) {i know that it myt be the spot guy whos misleading me.. , still wishing for an mtech seat is ok, ryt..! :) }.
Do i stand any chance for getting into any course at there (IIT KGP) - {OE/TE/EE/WRE} ? If not IITK ,what remaining to apply is iit indore and iit hyderabad .

Will definitely be applying for NIT admissions as well - (what about my chances in nit t,s,w ?) .

As my senior , i would like to ask something more to you . could you please help me sorting out my future career out there as a civil engineer.. Any tips will be highly appreciated..

    thank you shiju brother..

    1. hello prajin,

you have got good gpa. don't worry much of the gate result.don't be mislead by the last rank gate cutoff.during last time 2013,gate score of 560 would be around 650 rank.if you are in general, getting in iits is bit tough. CET btech is almost equivalent to many nit btech and our college and got good respect outside.you have such good cgpa ,but with this rank, you might not get a good college or good branch as you deserve.as a senior i would't advise anything less than iit for mtech. Many will tell that nit rank is so and so,cet is so and so hence go for nit.my personal opinion is that mtech should be done in place which is one step higher than btech.else don't go for mtech.bit harsh i guess, but thats the reality.mtech was never designed to give you job.its a platform for research.the best what i consider if you are interested in job is to tackle ies or go for psu and then take mtech.however if you are interested in research(some of my batchmates were motivated for research and they ridiculed those going for job) then don't do mtech anywhere less than iit.iit hyderabad i think will be most developed new iit in comming year because of its place advantage.but its also bit tough to get there.
as future career as civil engineer,i would suggest you to crack any psu or engineering service.there is a general lack of awareness in cet about ies.they presume that it is very tough and don't even care about it.as a senior i feel that there is very low alumini college interaction and thats why students from lesser known colleges get in ies where as cetian still are killing each other for companies like l&t,tcs etc.don't be surprised when i tell you that ies is not that competitive as many coaching center tells you.its definitely not unachievable for cetian. again many will criticise what i am saying but they are people who want to pull back every one.
please forgive me for deviating from the topic but let me also tell you something else.many of my batchmates in kgp are from l&t,saporjii etc.when i tell them that i did btech from cet, they almost instantly identified my seniors.they had very good word about them and were all praise for the college.that is the charisma that unknowing is embedded in every cetian and you should not waste it thinking low.you should aim at top jobs where ever you get into.you should not take rest.if you are in l&t work so hard that you will be in board member.if psus, aim to become chairman on entering itself,if govt. job, nothing less than ies.if mtech nothing less than iit,if you get in govt. job of state or central, don't be pulled down by others around you.don't care about them.eventually with your hard work they will be motivated to come up with you.and never listen to anyone who tell you to be sloppy and take it easy.surprising those sloppy lazy people who you encounter in college life will be the most hardworking ones out of the college.
don't be demotivated by what i tell you,but there is no harm in thinking to get in top position.you initially get a job which is not a top one, don't be dejected.its first step of ladder.don't forget to climb and don't dream low.

    2. thanks for your reply so quick , :)

something which i would like to add to my pvs post .
I fall in the OBC ncl category and not general .
The teacher i was mentioning was ruby abraham. u know her?

      my present status :
Final year university exams going on . applying for all those applications in parallel . applied for IIT KGP , IITH (and NIT admissions too ) . Going to write ongc graduate trainee exam , l n t hydrocarbon offshore scholarship exam , sbi po test , bits entrance exam etc in the coming months .

After gate results came , was a little disappointed coz i expected a rank between 700-1200 , unluckily my marks werent enough as i calculated . soon after i was thinking to go for repeating in delhi for IES coaching .
But as time pass by , my teacher advised me to try other chances like to get into a private firm and then study for gate & ies in parallel or get into some nit / lower iit or apply for every civil engg options i see or some other non-civil jobs like sbi po etc .

{ What you said is true ... cet ignores ies very much . i was the student gate (cet course) coordinator of my batch . here the classes are not upto the mark (in comparison to top coaching centers) . so its tough to get into top 500 , with exposure from college classes alone .
and about the campus placements here . its really good for all other branches except civil . we're so ignored here. only 3 companies came here ! l n t , kitco and a qatar company . could sit for all the 3 , but did'nt get any . no other companies came here.. which is so disappointing for us.. Cgpu says civil students has got lots of opportunities and they dont need placements much . :(
      Ive been to iitm as a part of lab visit and all , so ive seen the response of professors wen they see cetians . it was so welcoming... Loved it..! :) }

Frankly speaking am a bit clueless ryt now. as a cetian , ive got lots of ambitions . But lack good guidance . To go for repeating is a good option but at the same time it is so expensive and demands a year from my future . I wont like to pressure my parents for sending me out there but if they do , ill prove myself what am capable of . But before that am trying out every other possibilities which is in the ladder you mentioned .

      Delete
    3. ruby madam is an excellent teacher.i personally don't know her but she is a great motivator and some of my batch mates who have learnt from her have mentioned her.she had helped them during distress time.go for sbi po if you have ias in mind. ias is also one of the least considered job in cet.i don't know why,but really few students think of it even after having a huge talent pool. i have a great respect for her,but let me tell something very frankly.it is very tough to study parallel for gate or ies in private firm.its however good to have some first hand experience in firm, but at some point of time you have to drop and study exclusively, some of my friends have worked in private firm for 6-7 months and studied along but they gave up job to study exclusively for gate (3 months preparation).they have rank varying like 100,300 etc.study like hell for ongc and l&t hydrocarbon scholarship.if you don't want to pressure your parents, get a job.work with your ambition in your mind.be courageous to take some hard decision.
let me tell you about one of my colleague here at kgp.he is ies officer in BRO,studied from nit.he worked for 1.5 years in well paying private firm and then gave up that for self study in home.imagine agony of leaving a well paid job and studying for 6 months and not knowing whether he will get in or not.his home was near kharagpur,a bengali.he had a south indian btech friend at iit campus .he used his friends library card to get books.studied for 10h average 6 months and got in ies with 125 rank.now 9 years after doing job,he applied for study leave and studying mtech with me to achieve top post and be with his family.if you have ambition, don't let others tell what you should do.do on your own.don't say you don't want to pressure your parents and all.these are nothing more than excuses(please forgive me for being harsh).if you don't want to pressure your parents, increase pressure on yourself by getting a job, earn enough money and never back down from your ambition.do what ever is necessary for your ambition and hope that it will be successful.keep side option open, but if they are distractions from your goal, cut it.
now about placements.its bit sensitive issue. in my opinion cet have one of the worst placements among the other equivalent colleges.they are true about what they say.civil have lots of job in govt..if you want govt. job, civil is one of the best branch.other branches will suffer if they don't get placement.competition is also less for civil.if you don't believe me,see how many wrote gate exam in civil and electronics.

    4. i would like to add something about the gate coaching.i was also enrolled for gate coaching.however,i had't much attended the class.as you are a gate coordinator i would like to tell some of the basic disadvantage which i felt during my days.starting with positives.i fortunate to hear vinod sir's lecture of geotech.believe me,his lecture is far more superior than any top coaching center could offer and during my final year gate,i had got about 1700 rank only because i managed to solve all geotech, maths and GA questions.now other classes are also good.the biggest problem is they come, teach syllabus and go away without any gate specific input.thats where you have to push futher.the bible for getting into gate is previous year question paper.get a good solved question paper book like made easy previous year gate solution paper.don't take gk publication.its a bogus book.you can get made easy previous year book in flipkart. solve all questions in it atleast three times from gate class support.you will find gate notes photostat of ace or made easy from any photostat shop.do these things in discretion.also, there are some course like geotech, environment, maths, rcc,GA,water resource,sm which have very higher weightage than subjects like SA,FM,steel.study on higher mark scoring subject rather than be tied to do sa question of truss analysis,or influence diag. which is tough as well as less frequent.these things they don't tell and here comes role of senior to pass it on junior.you can pass it on to next batch.i still remember the pre placement advice talk organised by our seniors.they talked about all the mistakes they had done and suggested some remedies.the problem with gate is students will be pass outs to share these information to juniors and hence juniors are back in same position of ignorance as the seniors.a few minor adjustment like these on part of students will definitly improve rank and no of students getting it.

  20. What is the scope for m.tech in water resource engineering ? I heard many are not opting for this bracnch . Why is so ? Is there no scope in this branch ? My gate rank is (700-1000) and many of my coaching staffs are telling that you may get this branch in the old iits ? Shall i opt for this branch or i should repeat the gate exam again ? Please help !

    1. depends on your interest.they are telling right about admission in iits.not many opt for this branch thinking placements ae less.its true and its not only for water resource.all branchs except structures have same placement scenario.repeating gate exam is your personal decision.

Can you help me out with the interview questions asked in geotechnical in IIT Bombay, Kanpur and Delhi? Also since I have few days left for the interviews what should I do for preparing for the written as well as interviews- revert back to books or short notes?

    1. some questions are in my blog itself under title interview question of iit k,d ,b..this time take a basic book and see basic definitions, tests.in iit knapur try checking maths graph questions for interview.written in kanpur is subjective, hence here you have to revert back to book pile foundation question, check all important formulas etc.

  36. SIR , I got 757 rank in gate 2015. i am confused whether to take geotechnical in iit roorkee or structural in good nits.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sir, My name is Rohit Honey. I am from Kerala. I have a gate score of 501 in GATE 2015.

I got admission to IISc Banglore revised ME programme. Its through pure luck that i got in. Apparently IISc increased its intake and not enough applicants applied. The specialisation will be allotted at the end of first semester on the basis of first sem TGPA and GATE Score. There are 3 specialisation available Structure, Geotechnical and Water resources and environmental engineering.Since i have a very low gate score I will probably be allotted to Water resources and Environmental engineering.

Can you tell me about the scope in the industry for water resources and environmental engineering.
Which is better NIT Structural or IISc water resources and environmental. I am really confused please help.
