Civil MTECH BRANCH TRENDS AND REVIEWS

Civil MTECH BRANCH TRENDS AND REVIEWS

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

This branch is considered as the core of civil engineering. It mainly deals with the super structures and can been said as one which is displayed to whole world. Be it transportation environmental or any branch, there is structures. Hence it is versatile in nature.

TRENDS

One of the oldest and still evolving branch, it is most prestigious to civil engineers. Maximum BTECH prefer this branch over any other.

A very high employability chance and higher salary makes it the toughest specialization to get. The more increase in economy will lead to more infrastructures. Hence it is ideal branch for developing country like India. Most IIT dual degree guys prefer this branch for MTECH.

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

This branch is still the second most preferred branch in civil engineering, as it is easy to study as well as to feel the physical presence in studies itself unlike structural engineering. A branch with high scope in research field. It deals with foundation and below ground thing, so underplayed to whole world but important like anything.

TRENDS

Second to structures in placement, it is very much in demand in India and demand will grow in coming years due to need of building infrastructures in unfavorable places due to lack of land availability.

However, even after being second to structures, it has quite less placements and salary as compared to structures. Now the trend is shifting towards transportation in country.

TRANSPORTATION

This branch was considered to be third, is now slowly emerging as second option almost able to replaced geotech from its former glory. Dealing with transportation and traffic requirement.

TRENDS

Unlike structures and geotech, it’s not very interesting subject to study per se. however new mode of automobiles is forcing this branch to gear up. Also a good requirement in foreign countries is bait to BTECH guys to go for this branch rather than geotech. A good branch for developing India with lot of opportunities.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

An interdisciplinary branch including for civil engineering. Unlike other interdisciplinary branch available for civil engineering, this one is most known to civil engineers. It deals with the end product of all construction activities. This branch can be said as the ending branch for manmade manipulations to earth .this deals with sewers, environmental impact of projects, pollutions etc.

TRENDS

The branch that was totally neglected earlier is now coming in acceptance due to increase in environmental problems. The branch however suffers as it is far from it goal of improving environment. A relatively new addition to civil engineering, it suffers from many woes.first of all, it’s a theory oriented branch. It’s considered least intellectually challenging and one of the most creativity demanding specializations. The main problems being that the solutions provided by the engineers are usually neglected by the government and investors’ as it is not economically profitable.

IT HAS A FUTURE possibility of developing into major branch, which can happen only with fundamental change in its operating systems. Now it is just an engineering to allow law enforcement and to ticket for construction process. A major success story in India is the fly ash case. Earlier its disposal was of immense problem in India. But now combining it with cement leading to improvement in cement properties, its disposal problem have been solved. Such economically viable options needed unlike option of closing the whole factory itself, where no engineering required.

The demand of economically viable technologies make it ideal hub for innovative research. It can be said as the most meaningful research branch among the civil engineering branches.

Jobs in this branch is however quite poor for now. Many are saying that it will grow leaps and bounds. But for now it’s still a risky, low employment area. You should be mentally prepared to take teaching jobs in this area before hand. Also those with job are baffled with mind numbing data, dealing with bureaucrats. Unlike in structures where by the time you are 60 you would have headed hundreds of projects with your own style, here you would find very difficult for an innovation to be executed.

Job outside India is fairly good, but India is the country where this engineering field finds its most of use. Major employment option still is teaching and research. you can also look into different jobs types here.

There is a good line I read somewhere
After cutting every trees,
                  After poisioning every river,
                  After destroying every wild life,
Will man realize that he cannot eat money and drink petrol.

WATER RESOURCES

Water resource is a branch that deals with most important resource in world for human being. It’s one of the oldest branches. Unlike environmental engineering which is majorly theory, this has design criteria making it bit more interesting in engineering sense.

TRENDS

This branch is now going below environmental engineering due to its lack of employability criteria. The branch is also bit tough unlike environmental engineering.

STATEMENT

The data that I have represented is figure that is simplified for benefit of GATE qualified students. I shall under no circumstance be held accountable for the data or view I present. The data presented are from three year experience of writing GATE exam (third year 2011, fourth year 2012, one year coaching 2013) and three batches of alumnus of my college and friend’s friend.
The things I have mentioned are my own views. I don’t endorse any college or branch what so ever. No monetary benefit is derived from this. The views were formed with constant interaction with teachers, friends and reading many wonderful websites.
I intent this piece of article specifically for civil engineering students, and if I have hurt any body’s feeling unknowingly I apologize sincerely.

  2. Sir my rank is 391 & i have got shrtlisted fr transp. Engg at iit kanpur.Although u hve provided guidlines fr intrvw prep in ur blog bt i wanted to knw specifically wht to stdy so as to increase my chances of selectn.Only highway is imp or surveying and railways also.On which topics i should concentrate and what is the level of questions asked.Although in mail they hve mentiond tht my candidature for hydraulics will be considered i wanted to knw tht i will be allwd to appr fr other branches also or nly transp&water. And as my first choice is transp. Do they will give my less pref. In water intrvw or selectn will be on merit only. And lastly do they seriously give 70-30 weightage fr gate score & intrvw or is it only in writing.SIR PZ REPLY IM WAITING FOR UR GUIDANCE THANKS IN ADVANCE
