ACE ACADEMY-my experiences
Ace academy is one of the pioneers in gate coaching for MTECH
admission. It is one of the oldest to have started the business in field of
coaching GATE
exam. Gate exam is a way for higher engineering education in India.
ABOUT MYSELF
Before
going further, a little about myself. Myself shiju, alumni of college ofengineering Trivandrum , which have been ranked under 50 in all engineering colleges of India. I am a
civil engineering student and I have studied in ace. I am not a promoter of any
product, but just a blogger sharing my experiences without any monetary
benefit.
GATE
unlike IIT JEE is an easier way to land in IIT. Till 2012, GATE was primarily a
way to get there. Hence, was earlier ignored by many top engineering college
students But now it’s a mandatory exam as it also provides jobs for many in PSU’S
as well. Now they are taking it seriously.
The
number of students in civil branch taking exam in 2012 was about 30000 but in
2013 it was double 67472. Also some topper students were IIT BTECHS, hence
reinstating the growing importance of the exam which was earlier neglected.
Civil engineering is a branch which constitutes less than 10% for all core
branches hence making the completion fairly easier.
Competition
among the reservation people are also getting high, with SC ST students getting
more interested in higher education. However its sparing less. Also OBC
completion is getting fierce with reservation also in some case fetching just a
50 rank difference from general category.
Unlike
IIT JEE, the toppers of GATE are generally average students with just
fundamentals clear and hard working. There is no prerequisite of excellence in
intelligence to crack the exam. however sometimes even highly intelligent gets
beaten in selection to IIT MTECHS as the guys with low score may get better
colleges and better rank than the high scorer. Learn more about common mistakes in

IS A COACHING REQUIRED?
The
gate exam needs no formal coaching for those studying fourth year, but it is
advisable to take some study materials of GATE as the syllabus is vast and
learning from the fundamental books will be a waste of time. Ace academy
materials are good ones for civil engineering.
Those
who are wishing to attend GATE exam after passing out or after doing job or a
gap, must join some institute. The main thing is either you should self study
with job in hand or with no job, self study rarely works. But in MTECH
interview don’t be so honest to tell
them that you studied in a particular institute. Tell them you did self study
and also were in hunt for jobs.
IS GATE WORTH DROPING ONE YEAR?
It
depends on your condition. If you have no job, common among civil engineer fresher,
one year dropping is not harmful.
If
you have job, then job type matters. If you have IT job and have no interest in
civil engineering, better take the job. Also remember unlike other branches,
civil engineering is a branch which is very interesting in field work than BTECH
studies. My friends who despised civil are now the biggest advocators after
tasting success in civil field. Also IT companies matter, the respected ones
like TCS, CTS, HCL, mu sigma etc are ones which have good atmosphere.
If
you have great jobs from IOC, L&T, NTPC,COAL INDIA,ONGC or construction companies then dropping them
without joining for at least one year is mistake. Here are some facts regarding
these great
company employees taking MTECHS.
ACE ACADEMY
Its good
institute to those who don’t have any fundamental of BTECH. Particularly
Hyderabad one is good for civil MTECH aspirants. Faculties teaching are those
who have real field experiences and are still consultants in the field.
General methodology
Particularly it is GATE oriented
teaching. So the teaching is to the point. There are motivation classes taken
by them, which is good for clarity in the MTECH branches you wish to take and
also to keep going one year one exam. Also they give tips and tricks to study
what is necessary. A regular study is however necessary.
In general, structures (rcc,steel and all that )is the subject that is back
bone of civil engineering. The faculty for structures teaches from basics.
Since you are BTECH pass outs, this time you would give due importance. This
subject is the toughest for many students baring the NIT & IIT guys. But
GATE gives little importance to them. However, even the NIT guys are majorly
weak in environmental and water resources
which are given high importance in GATE. Math
is easy and high scoring. The geotech and
transportation is the one that is easy, high scoring and occupies chunk of
GATE. Advanced electives such as prestressed and traffic engineering are given
due importance.
Getting a good hostel partner is
very important. Also important is to know that it very expensive in Hyderabad
hostels. A minimum rent of 2500 per month may be expected. The classes may
start as early as 6:00 in morning to as late as 8:00 in evening. This only
happens towards the end.
On Good side the performance given in ACE website is completely true. There is large
number of toppers from institute. The institute in Hyderabad is a major multi
culture attractor. Large chunks in civil branch in descending order are from
Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil nadu, Gujarat , one or two
even from Kashmir and Andaman and nicobar. My own college batch mate had 52
rank. You will be surprised to see many guys who were all time back benchers in
colleges waiting in queue to get to first bench. Since mobile mike is used
hearing won’t be a problem.
On flip side, many even don’t qualify. After attending and spending
22000 bucks this is what you least expect. The numbers are same as the number
of toppers. This is the thing you should be prepared to take risk. But here is
the catch. Even before gate exam you can write ONGC exam. Even after getting
not good score in GATE, it is not the end of the world. The IES comes after
this. Many disqualified bright guys are now IES officers. . Gate knowledge with
daily newspaper reading and little descriptive preparation is more than enough.
Rarely GATE toppers make it to last level of IES. Around this time SAIL, ISRO (for
civil also 1 vacancy), SSC also gives exam and GATE preparation definitely
helps.
MY CASE
My case is in between two. I
have got 548 rank with 54.67 marks. Fourth year mine was 1706 with 44 marks. A
low rank means both good college and not so good specialization or vice versa. However
a fourth year GATE disqualified guy, now after passing out have 61 rank. It all
matters on your dedication and also little on luck.
STATEMENT
The data
that I have represented is figure that is simplified for benefit of GATE
qualified students. I shall under no circumstance be held accountable for the
data or view I present. The data presented are from three year experience of
writing GATE exam (third year 2011, fourth year 2012, one year coaching 2013)
and three batches of alumnus of my college and friend’s friend.
The things I have mentioned are my

The teaching is worse part. If you are interested to join classes and going to other city for sake of classes; then you are wasting money. You better avail online tutoring and Mock tests of other classes and you will not regret.

Well, they used to teach you from very basics and then move forward.Literally,there was no need to study before hand.butr,now even iit mtechs are writing GATE for PSUs.sucess ratio for them is low and hence there is no need to worry too much (if you are preparing for GATE).If you are planning for IES,it requires full 1 year preparation.for this basics should be topmost priority.For GATE they will tell you to neglect SA,STEEL,FM(excluding OPEN CHANNEL),high priority to geotech,enviro,math,sm,rcc,water resources,open channel,General apptitude etc.There is 90% chance if you study what they tell you,you will get good rank.
Deletehowever ,its good to start preparing basics for SM,geotech and structures(determinate and plastic analysis only).nptel is a very good source to study,but stick to parts you don't know rather than watching all.

Classroom coaching :course content is good...many of the lecturers are also good....but they are bad in time management...for last 2-3 years they have not been able to finish the course on time. for example full time batches joining in july finished their course only in jan end...some days there will be 14 hr classes ..morning 6 to evening 8...and some days no class at all.on an average 6-8 hours class daily for batches starting in july..Also you will know the class schedule for tomorrow only today.This leaves very little time for self preparation and to follow any preparation schedule. For example power system happens on 4rth august, then next power systems class may come on 10th sep.It will be difficult for student to do time managemnet for short term batches.There is limited time for doubt clearing ( only in break time in between classes).since the same teacher caters to many batches, it is difficult to expect response either on phone or mail.Expect classrooms to be cramped initially as multiple batches are put in the same class.Gradually as students drop out, it will be easy to find place to sit. Following teachers give the best notes and concepts; Machines, Power systems,Analog,Power electronics, Measurements,control systems,network theory; Bad notes are digital,engineering maths.
ReplyDeletePostal coaching : do not take their postal coaching as course material is not upto date. you will get to know about corrections in classroom only. also for most of the questions , no answer or solution is given.these problems are solved in the classroom only.to overcome these you may purchase the class room teacher notes available with street vendors in ameerpet and abids in hyderabad.
Online exams: their online portal for exams is easy to use and works perfectly.
For extra problems and practice use RC Kanodia books.For theory class room Teacher notes are the best as it combines multiple books + teacher experience.
For average students 1yr practice is required. Cover the theory (use class room teacher notes available with street vendors in ameerpet and abids in hyderabad) of all topics in btech final year before joining ACE classes, so that you can directly focus on problem solving,concept analysis,referring extra course books and specific doubt clearing with teachers.

I am planning to join ace academy Hyderabad at abids for gate 2015. my problem is that some times i am confused whether to waste one year for gate or start looking for jobs. I am not interested in field related works but has a passion for structural works preferably office related. i am confused as what to do next?? plse help me.
ReplyDeleteSince you have marks,try for campus placements.It seems that you like structural design jobs,try for some consultancy companies.While studying you can apply ssc, cds, various PSUs.But once you have made your mind for GATE,a six month rigorous preparation should be done.After you have made your mind don't let job tension side track your performance.you can apply for IES as well and clear as well . many of my friends have done that.but ies requires a bit more different approach as against GATE.but one year time is more than enough for both.
Deletesome times students get diverted while preparing for exams and start to take lightly towards end. That is when even after high preparation they don't get through.but,unfourtunately that is the risk you have to take and no one can do any thing about it.however,the thing you have prepared will not go waste and even apart from gate,IES, there are many PSUs, state exams.If its structures you are interested a rank below 100 is must for A grade IITS,and below about 300 for newer ones.so prepare like hell! if you have family constraints then you should try for a job and work.but now you are young.take risk and put every thing behind it.if you want structures don't lose focus at the end.
This is the best motivation i have ever got on choosing between job or higher studies, "select a path and stick to it till the end"... Yes i have decided, Gate it is. and Ace Academy here i come..:)..thanx a lot Shiju..

Sir I am final year student nd get 5 marks in gate 2014...and now I am like a really frustated guy..plz tell me wat should I do next...is there any hope for me to clear gate 2015..or may be better to find a. Job....
ReplyDeletedude,don't be frustated.many of the toppers were disqualified for first time.however,they bounced back studying 10 h a day to get within 100 rank.i myself have attended close to around 33 interviews before getting one job earlier,whereas my friends could easily get 3-4 jobs in their first time interviews.That don't mean you should be complacent.when you loose,don't loose the lesson.take some time rest and then think with clear head.

ReplyDeletewell,for time distribution i am not the best person to be asked.you can see previous toppers interview and then you will get an idea.now about do's and don'ts.well if you are preparing for 1 year,time is not a serious concern.but boredom is.you should never forget why you are studying and be focussed.also,in ace they start slow,but at the end its very fast and lot of syllabus convered at the end.students including myself makes the mistake of not practising after the class.also in the end making formula shortnotes is very helpful.revision at end is of high importance.at the end ace acadamy provides books of prevoius mock test,grand test conduted by them.please don't take it.its waste of time.but take previous year gate solved books.solve atleast 15 year question papers(another mistake which i did't do).take online test given by them seriously.don't take rank given in them too much.but you should clear all the mistake in all the online test(again another mistake.four or five questions had come for GATE exam was same as online test questions which i had made wrong and did't carefully look for answer.)hope it helps.as for books,take them to clarify some portion which you have not understood clearly,but don't usually read full book or solve full text.its waste of time for atleast GATE exam.in the end,gate has seriously become highly competitive than when i had written because of the no. of jobs offered by psus through it.

please suggest me i am in confusion state
assuming you are general,if it is iit which interests you,check for environment, water resources and prepare for interview in delhi,bombay for safe side.if you have good conceptual knowledge and had project in geo or transport, you can try interview geotech or transportation in kanpur or bombay with risk but people have got in.rest in case of direct admission your preference should be as you wish.if you have no special preference or dislike,generally students put options as structure,geo or transport or construction management,envir or water. some colleges provide special branches and you must read brochure carefully.eg-applied mechanics in delhi,structural dynamics in roorkee(earth quake dept.),infrastructure managment in kgp etc.

thank u Shiju for inspiring me by this most amazing blog..i want some suggestion from u..i ve completed my btech in civil engg. from c.v.raman college,odisha in 2013.i was also the topper of my branch..but its very pathetic dat i m not able to qualify the gate 2014..so now i m under stress...currently i am a lecturer,but i have decided dat i ll quit my job and go for preparation in ACE ACADEMY HYD...i think i have weak fundamentals in structure..but i have a strong determination..anyhow i have to crack GATE 2015 below AIR 300...So plz suggest me..is it possible to score very goodmarks with my hardwork and self confidence along with the coaching from ace academy?
ReplyDeletelet me be frank.no one can give you the promise that you will get below 300.it all depends.many people who have disq. in first attempt have been below 10 and many who were below 500 in first attempt had rank more than 2000 after coaching.you can't summarise anything from this except the unpredictability.but one thing is sure.hard work will bring success in one way or other.many of the guys who have come here are those who have left their job studied 8 h for 6 months and got through.i have never met a person who was "lucky" enough to get in.at some moment of life they had thought about it and worked for it.if you are not satisfied with this job and are willing to study mtech,i don't think this small set back should stop you.ace acadamy,made easy or other institute can supplement you but then finally its you who have to the hard part.and finally if you are determined,you should not keep rank below 300,it should be below 100.

ReplyDeletethere is no need of coaching if you are good in studies.remembering formula is one part(it should be in finger tips),practicing derivation don't fetch much mark.also i have seen many students cramming is codes each and every design details.a few of important ones will do.the main thing is the concept building.gate is concept oriented exam.the highest scorers have consistently performed well in maths,geotech,envi.,sm,water resource,open chanel flow,rcc,apptit,transportation..the subjects like strucutral analysis,steel(except plastic analysis)fm(except open chanel flow) have high course content and low mark.if you like strutures focus more on sm and rcc.
Deletethe best self study is take a book(made easy previous year book is good) with previous solved question and concentrate on higher mark giving subject and giving little importance to SA,FM.solve all questions.one thing i did't do was that i never corrected the mistakes that i had commited repeatedly and focussed on just correcting the problem.in exam time atlest 50% of question which i had got wrong were those which i had earlier done and now in exam also repeated the same mistake.
A lot of hostels are there around Gunfoundry,King Kothi & Abids .Among which Vishwakarma boys hostel is the better one among the varous hostels i have seen there.4 bedded rooms- rs 4000 per month with food or u could stay in flats, a lot are available with about 1500- 2000 rs per head per month.

ReplyDeleteto get good concept,its neccesary to solve different types of problems which might use same formula.if you see gate exam,the formulas used for the questions are same but they ask in different way.you have to identify which formula to be used in which question.some question calls for use of multiple formulas.practice and self improving the mistakes are only way.some part like maths,transportation etc are direct formula oriented and hence max.people score here.but the key to success is practice hard right questions.previous year questions are good for such questions.

ReplyDeleteThey teach in a very simplified manner, explain the concepts well (of those topics which are required for gate exam only).At the end they conduct mock exams and online exams.They will anyway cover the portions,but its advisable to join early batches so that they will teach slowly and u will get enough time for preparation. A lot of excellent faculties there,especially in SM,RCC, Geotechnical, Hydrology, Environment, Openchannel & Structures.After teaching the lesson, they would solve almost all the previous year gate questions and some IES objective questions,so that we could get clarity.Classes are intresting

iit k water resource if you do interview well.iit guhati is possible.but try for iit k as i have met person who have similar rank and got in iit k.please keep water resource as first option and do study maths well.

ReplyDeleteI graduated from NIT CALICUT in the year 2013 and in that year my gate rank was 5600 (OBC)and i didnt get any campus placement so i had no idea about what to do.I waited till july till CCMT 2013 was over, i didnt get any NIT.So i decided to join ACE ACADEMY Hyderbad. Classes have started for different batches when i joined there in august 1st week.In the end i have to pay price for joining late.They were able to complete classes only on jan mid week while gate exam was on feb 2.Another mistake i did was i joined there for IES Batch hoping to get more indepth knowledge.My advise all those who are going to join ACE ,join there as much early as possible, preferebly in 1st or 2nd batch starting in june end so that they could finish portions in time and u would get ample time for preparation.Also if u are aiming for gate and PSUs ''DONT'' join IES batch there in the begining,join gate batch and study.After GATE ,you can join extended batch there if u are intrested in IES.The thing i observed there is that teachers there and material supplied are good, thanks to them i got 1100 rank this time.But hey have no schedule.Also this time as usual they said to concentrate on geo,env, hydrology,open channel,prestress and maths and to ignore steel, structures & fluids but last time trnd got reversed . Question setters gave so much importance to structure steel & fluid mechanics and almost ignored Maths and hydrology.So dont take any subjects lightly as they say,study all.Classes there vary, sometimes from 6 am to 1 pm or from 2 to 8:30 pm or 9 am to 5:30 pm are the usual schedules depending on the availability of faculty and there will be half an hour break in between 2 hour classes.Good luck to all.

Deleteraghu,sorry for the late reply.dude we all are average guys.don't worry about knowlege in civil engineering.a struggle is needed for getting anything,and AE nothing different and is achievable.if you are talking about ae through engineering services,a bit more rigour is needed.if you are talking about ae through state,any coaching or self study can give you that.starting will definitly be frustating.it can be reduced by finding a good study group to help out.basics can also be learnt from nptel.but don't watch everything.just the ones you are completely lost.

ReplyDeleteI m planning to join Ace Hyd long term batches for gate 15 EE branch.
I have a second class degree (below 60%) But if i score good marks in Gate and secure good ranking , am i eligible for admission in any iit as i have a 2nd class degree and most of them are asking for 1st class.
Another question is , my basic concepts are very poor so do u recommend any preparation before joining classes , as the level of teaching at ace academy will be damn too high for an average guy. Shall i prepare for the basic concept for one month before joining???
As you ace Academy have many centers but I want to know that whether it is worth to study in Ace delhi center or hyderabad center especially for instrumentation basically i am from gwalior(M.P.)
ReplyDeleteThis year ace academy is starting a new batch called SPARK batch for students who have got min of 80% in engineering, i am eligible for spark batch but still confused as to whether to go for normal batch or Spark batch. Will the teachers vary and will the teaching be fast paced? Also is anyone joining for spark batch this year?

ReplyDeleteHello brother, I tried postal coaching in which they will send you study material and practice questions. But you can't get the problems solved by their material. If you can manage your time, you can try it. When I took postal coaching last year, I was late to apply and was not able to study well. But I suggest you to go for class room coaching for better results. I am doing the same this time.

ReplyDeletehai bro..the blog is very much motivating..i am a civil engineering graduate of 2014 batch..presently am working in kitco. i have got only 15 marks in gate 2014..As am in my 4th month job i realised that its not my way,and to pursue my master degree in reputed institutions like IIT..now am unable to join in leading coaching centers as they already have started the batches..am utilizing my free times maximum for covering up gate syllabus..nw am thinking of doing postal coaching of ace academy.am in a confusion that how much that material will use for me..can u please suggest me a good option..
ReplyDeletePostal coaching is good if you have your fundamentals right.the materials are good and concise except maybe environmental engineering.they have all the formulas and precise notes needed.but before you start it is better if you buy previous year solved question paper of gate by made easy.start by looking at the pattern and then refer to notes according to the importance of the subject.solve the previous year four to five times without looking at the answer which sure may sound silly,but has worked for many.learning the postal notes linearly will be very tough given that you have job also.so start solving previous year and find the concept used from standard books or notes.In Gate the concepts repeat and its important that you understand the problems conceptually.don't be intimidated by the toughness of the problems.just start solving bit by bit and with passage of time you will be able to do questions involving multiple concepts.Its important that you know the pattern of the exam and know what to study and what you should leave.

Deletehi i am 2012 pass out. after that 6 month i completed my supplies then i worked for 1 year then i prepared for gate 4 month . i just qualified it 340 only score . i didnt got any govt college . so i decided to try next year. i has so many doubts

don't join private college for Mtech. The college reputation do matter in case of higher studies as not only it provides for good Profs. but also good research facilities.I am not sure about last question.
DeleteI am a pass out of the year 2014. I am working in paharpur cooling towers ltd. It is a good company but the work environment is bad and people are very very uncultured. Most of them are diplomas who cannot digest the fact that I am from a NIT(Rourkela) and fresher and will surpass them in salary in a year or so. They harras me and make me do all the work whilst I am in my training period. I want to prepare and get a good enough rank for gate so that I can et admission in some research program in good IITs or IISc. Please help me and suggest what to do! :(
ReplyDeleteit sometimes tough to work with boss or colleagues who are lesser qualified than you.as a fresher everyone expects the seniors to add value.sometimes they make you do more work and they take credit for it.sometimes its simply because they might not know how to do it like working with new technologies etc and want those who know to do it.see what is with your case.see if they add value to you with their experience.if its a site type job,work environment will be not so good.higher studies are always good.but its better if you know what you want before coming, than knowing what you want after coming.take the decision with cool head.after you have arrived at the decision,check what has to be done.you only know how much you know and what level of preparation you need.faster method is to solve previous year solved question paper conceptually many times until you become comfortable.this may not give a very high rank,but it is better and fast.for a high rank you may need a bit longer preparation.it also depends on how much you know already.if you had gate level preparation already in your btech,two months of rigorous preparation with solved paper will get you through.but ultimately its your decision.

ReplyDeleteShiju , enikku oru doubt undu . After applying for Postal coaching of ACE Academy online , is it absolutely necessary that I visit any of the ACE centres to get ID Card ? Otherwise , will they not send me postal material ? The ACE Centers are outside Kerala And I dont want to travel just for the sake of recieving an ID card number . I already paid the fees . Why should I ?

sir, i have got an direct admission in transportation at iit kgp, many people are telling me that the placements are not good in kgp compared to roorkee and madras(as delhi and bombay are good at placements), how will be the placements for transportation in kgp, madras and roorkee?
ReplyDeleteHi, This is about ACE academy in Hyderabad. My experience about ACE was very poor. The classrooms and facility provided in their so called head office branch (Abids) is below standard. The teaching is worse part. If you are interested to join classes and going to other city for sake of classes; then you are wasting money. You better avail online tutoring and Mock tests of other classes and you will not regret.
ReplyDeleteACE would not give any demo lecture. Once you pay the fees and next instance ask for refund, they would not give a single penny. They are just looting.
They do false publicity of their classes.
N.B. I qualified GATE using books and mock test available in market. And done M.Tech. from one of most reputed institute in India.
