Indian institute of tropical metrology pune is a premiere
institute for preparing scientist from different back ground in exciting field
of climate research and weather forecasting.
I had gate rank 548 and was called for the interview based
on the gate score. And so were 320 students. And then additional 100 students
for a total of 420.first thing first, i didn’t get into it.
I reached pune one day before and after little exploration got
into park lodge near shivajinagar. Actually it was a dormitory type room with 5
beds, while going out you have to give your belonging to the reception. A had
to shell out 300 rs per day for two days, until I was out in the first
interview. However near pashan (i.e. near institute there is 100 rs lodge which
escaped my eyes).
The day was bright and I went to the institute. The wall
stopped me. Well WALL is the name of private security like SIS. After filling
in all the formality, I entered into a beautiful ultra small campus which ended
even before it started. I had great affiliation for this job as I was lazier
than sloth and I thought the metrology department is the one place where my
potential laziness will be fully realised.
This being the 23rd interview I had already
memorised the frequent questions like “introduce yourself, why IITm?”Minute
long explanations for both questions were already made. IITm is prestigious
institute of basic research, I want to be in research area, climate studies are
essential as co2has crossed 400 ppm and all global climate problems
have hurt my consciousness.
Civil and maths were together. We were escorted to the HPC
training room. My all hopes were dashed when I came to know about our
competitors.25 people from civil and 8 from maths. Among the 25 civil, one girl
was btech from IIT gandinagar, one from IIT guwhati environmental, one was IIT
madras duel in infrastructure, one IIT madras mtech construction management
with 70 rank at that time however came here with gate rank of only 1200.rest
were from coal India limited,8 L&t and others and then jobless me.
Mathematicians were two from IIT Bombay msc, two PhDs, and rest commoners only
jobless me.
I gulped hard. One or two seats and this much competitions.
My turn came and I was interviewed by 8 interviewers. One structures, one
hydrology two mathematicians and rest I could not deduce.
They started by asking ‘what
are you doing now?’, and I replied mtech
counselling and presently interview preparation for 5 days.
They asked “where
have you applied?” by past experiences I instinctively replied I had applied everywhere and i have still
now got nowhere.
They laughed and asked “why
IITM?”
I replied that I want to do research in basic science.
Don’t tell that I have studied hydrology and I like it.
They said “this field
requires knowledge of math, are you familiar with it?”
I nodded.
Do you know
differential wave equation?
No, but I have studied
but unable to recollect know terzagi differential equation. They asked me
to write and explain all parameters in the board.
Then came my arcillies heel. They asked a simple BMD of
simple propped cantilever, I messed up completely. My fate was decided.
Then they asked to draw the graph of ex2, and i
drew it.
Then they asked what is regime channel and contour maps.
They also asked about compaction graphs and for other guys a simple portal frame
BMD, full differential continuity equation in it with density, hydrographs
uses.
Some other guys they asked how climate modelling is done,
what is difference in climate and weather.
Mathematicians were bombarded with Laplace equations,
Fourier equations, navi stocks formula, and analytic function definition.
And the result of these two girls two boys were chosen who
had rank close to thousands. One was IIT Gandinagar; two L&T. no IIT Bombay
mathematicians as they were from pure mathematics and the institute need only
applied guys. Those two were fuming about why the hell have they called and
shortlisted them if there was no use of pure maths. They had no preference for
higher GATE scorer.
In the end result came. 50 students chosen from almost 250
who came. The sky had turned dark. My name was not on the list. It started raining,
may be sky was weeping for me not being selected or Pissing at me for Missing
23rd Time. I could see more space in the list and thought if there
could be one more person to be added. I again checked and then within eleven
hours was in Hyderabad with parents battling my old enemy.......diahorrea.

awsome blog dude............even my gate score is 508 i ll take admission in 2014 with the same score....rite now preparing for civil services.........can you suggest some branch which i can surely get in iit delhi and kanpur........my gate-2014 score will become 608..........thanx a lot..:)
ReplyDeletethanks man.good luck for your civil services.assuming your branch to be civil,we can't predict what you can get in comming year.but i will give some eg of people with almost same score who got in kanpur and delhi. both delhi and kanpur and interview + gate based selection, however iit delhi gave a higher interview cut off among all iit in 2013. iit delhi also prefer higher ranker, high interview performance(never tell to them that you are studying for ias or ies) they will never take you.iit kanpur gives more preference to little low rankers and high interview performance.for preparation of ias it will be better to take iit d.as for iit d you can never say sure, but u have good chance in environmental, water resource, applied mechanics, rock engineering if in general cateogory.
Deleteiit kanpur if interview is good ,good chance in geotech, environmental.water resources.
nice blog bro .. civil eng blogs are quite rare..i have gate score 642 and will be applying for iitd 2014..my rank is 1420.. Q1.do u think i have a chance in structures?..Q2.how is construction engg&managment?...Q3.is it similar to structures?..its written in the brochure tht they take 4choices out of which the'll consider first 2 choices only.(dont know why they want 4 choices then)..last time 2013 cutoff was 661 for structures.and const engg was 598...Q4.what should be my first 2 choices then?..i am also considering enviromental too in these first 2 choices(cutoff was 531..so safer side)...Q5..is it tht they will ask questions on envi if i put envi in my first 2 choices? coz i am no good in envi..but im very good at structures even my final year proj was on struct...PS: i want to take iitd so as to prepare for service commission..not interested in placements of structures/const engg/envi at iitd....Sorry i know i have asked too many questions but i want iitd very badly..thanks you!
ReplyDeletethe previous score and present score is very much different.for 2013 661 was within 200 rank.598 should be around 400 rank.my interview was for env. and water resources.they ask for 4 choices, but they will call only for 2 interview based on whether you clear the interview attending cut off.if you want iit d,structures is tough.you should go for lower rank branches.
Deletethanks..so is there any chance of getting envi @ iitd for 1420 rank??
DeleteFormer PA to IITM director leaked paper via email: CBI
ReplyDeleteAsseem Shaikh, TNN | Jul 18, 2014, 05.57AM IST
Pune: The CBI, Pune, on Thursday said that Chabi Bardhan, former personal assistant to the director of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pashan, had leaked a question paper and answer sheet to prospective candidates via email in March in lieu of huge illegal gratifications.
During a search conducted at the IITM on July 11, the CBI retrieved Bardhan's March 1 email which contains the two attachments. The startling revelation was made by the CBI in a report filed by additional superintendent of police K Babu before the special judge D M Deshmukh on Thursday. The report was filed in response to an anticipatory bail plea filed by Bardhan.
Bardhan did not turn up before the court when her bail plea came up for hearing, but her lawyer S K Jain submitted before the court that her custodial interrogation was not essential as the agency had seized documents pertaining to the jobs scam. Jain pleaded for bail on the grounds that she was ready to co-operate with the CBI.
The CBI has opposed her bail stating that there was prima facie evidence to show her involvement in the scam which requires a detailed investigation.
The CBI report said that Bardhan had retired on December 31, 2012. She had received retirement benefits of Rs 13,69,637. She now gets a pension of Rs 15,000 per month. Bardhan and her husband, who has also retired, have fixed deposits of Rs 62,44,506 and Rs 65,58,734 respectively in various bank accounts.
Investigations have been launched to find out if the assets owned by the couple is from their legal source of income or disproportionate to their know source of income. The CBI has found that IITM had re-appointed Bardhan as an advisor on a contractual basis on the day of her retirement for a period of four years on a salary of Rs 27,000 per month. Her salary was later enhanced to Rs 33,000 a month.
The CBI report gives details of how Bardhan abused her official position to accept huge illegal gratifications from prospective candidates by either helping them get jobs or offering them promotions by allegedly influencing the IITM director. The report also gives details of two cars Bardhan hired for the IITM on a rent of Rs 65,000 per month. One of the cars is owned by Bardhan's relative while the other is owned by an IITM employee's relative.
The CBI justified the need for issuing a look out notice for Bardhan arguing that the institute director had nominated her to attend international conference at the Netherlands between July 13 and 18 and that her son was working in the US. The CBI feared that Bardhan may go missing and may not be available for questioning because of her impending foreign visit.
The report read that Bardhan is absconding till date which was evident from the fact that she had not reported for duty nor applied for leave. Her flat at Range Hills road was sealed as she was not available for conducting searches.
Investigations have further revealed that Bardhan on retirement was given the charge of the administration and transport departments. This, according to the CBI report, had given her leverage in the matter of making appointments and hiring vehicles. Special public prosecutor Vivek Saxena will open his arguments for opposing her bail plea before the court on Friday.

DeleteFirst of all, I would apologize to Mr. Shiju Varghese for writing in his blog without his prior consent, as this topic is completely out of the context of his blog. But when I saw these "Biased" News articles about IITM posted in this blog, I could not resist myself from writing.
Mr. Varghese, yours is a great blog I'd say and I am pretty sure most of the visitors to your blog are the next generation intellects, well educated people. This is one of the main reason for my urge to write in this blog, as it is you, the Next Gen to decide what kind of a system you'd want for betterment of this country.
This entire episode of the CBI is a mere attempt to malign the image of the Director, Prof. B.N Goswami. You all can check his biodata which is available in the web (http://caos.iisc.ernet.in/faculty/bng/person.html / http://www.tropmet.res.in/~bng/bng-sc-carieer.html). He is a highly acclaimed scientist. Before coming back to India, he was associated with world renowned Institutes like NASA, MIT, Princeton University etc. In mid 80's he decided to come back to India and to work for his motherland. He could have easily stayed back in US and could have earned astounding fame and money. However he was driven by the zeal to work for his country..
Before joining IITM, he had worked for IIT Delhi and IISC Bangalore.
IITM, as many other Govt institutes, was a dying Institute when he took charge as the Director eight years back. It is due to this person's relentless efforts the Institute has revamped and has become a world renowned research Institute in its field. This can be clearly established by a simple Before-After analysis of the Institute's performance. This Institute has even attracted several Indian talents working in other countries to come back to India and research in this institute for betterment of the country. IT IS INEVITABLE THAT WHILE DISCHARGING HIS STRICT AND IMPARTIAL DUTY TOWARDS BETTERMENT OF THE INSTITUTE, HE HAD OFFENDED MANY.
This person, Prof. Goswami had dared to fight inefficiency, incompetency and corruption in the Institute. He had adopted a zero tolerance policy towards incompetency and corruption. This is a very rare, but an essential trait we expect from each and every official serving for the country so that every penny that we pay in the form of Taxes is well spent for betterment of the country. Unfortunately the reality is different. It is our weak governance and judicial system that has created more protective layers around the guilty, and no protection for the honest officers.
Exactly the same thing has happened to this person. The offended people of the Institute have colluded and now leaving no stone unturned to gain their personal vendetta. These are the people who feels "promotion" is their birth right and this institute is their safe haven. These are the people who were removed from the purchase committees for their integrity issues and that their shop was closed by Prof. Goswami!!! These are the people who do not want changes, so called scientists who are just sitting there for their comfort of a secured job!!!
It is my humble request to each and every one of you to actively participate, to gather unbiased information about the incidence and come forward. It is not about this one man only, but about the entire system that deters the honest to serve for the country. This system must be changed!!!
IITM muddle out in the open, dark clouds over top brass

The raid, say scientists, at least focused on a national institute “where several objectionable activities were being carried on blatantly.”
Over 300 scientists feeling “suffocated and humiliated” at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology have begun to breathe somewhat easy. The reason was last week’s CBI raid, long expected. The raid, say scientists, at least focused on a national institute “where several objectionable activities were being carried on blatantly.”
They allege corruption in recruitment process, construction work and procurement of costly equipment. As many as 22 sleuths of the anti-corruption wing of the CBI conducted searches at the IITM last week for nearly 16 hours and took into possession several files, documents and hard disks. The examination of hard disks revealed that exam papers for a recruitment examination of 2014, along with answers, were leaked.
The CBI raided IITM premises followed several complaints of malpractice and corruption in the recruitment process. They questioned director B N Goswami to collect information and documents. The raid was apparently conducted after inputs from some scientists. On Monday, CBI filed corruption cases against three employees, one of whom is Chhabi Bardhan. The CBI issued a lookout notice against Chhabi who remained untraced for three days.
Chhabi had retired from IITM at 60, which was the norm for government servants. Scientists allege Chhabi’s service term was extended twice in four years. Chhabi began as a steno, became personal assistant to the director and the latest position she held was of an LACD (Looking After Current Duties) manager.
“She was appointed LACD manager as the administrative officer and accounts manager were on leave for four months. She was handling projects involving crores of rupees…How can you appoint a retired person who has no knowledge of accounts and administration to such key positions?” asked a senior scientist, one of those who wrote the complaint to CBI. Bardhan was allegedly given two promotions in six months.
Scientists alleged that Bardhan called the shots — at the behest of Goswami in all IITM matters including administrative and financial. “In fact, director Goswami had once declared that he doesn’t know anything about the administration, that’s why Bardhan will look after it…,” a scientist said.
Demanding a thorough probe, scientists alleged that IITM practised favouritism in the last four years. “At least 50 scientists who are Bengalis have been recruited while scientists from Maharashtra and other parts have been ignored. There should be a thorough probe against the director as well…We were long feeling humiliated and uneasy. The CBI action is welcome, but half-hearted. CBI should probe the top brass…”
Scientists say Goswami retired from service, but was given an extension but “under which norm, nobody knows.” The CBI also filed cases against IITM transport cell in-charge Sanjay Hansale and an upper divisional clerk Amit Kumar. Ironically, Hansale is slated to get “the best performance award” from the Ministry of Earth Sciences on July 27.
Scientists allege that anybody who spoke in favour of IITM top brass got out-of-turn promotions, those who did not were given instant memos. “Scientists have been demeaned by putting them in departments which had nothing to do with qualification.. A scientist who had a A scientist said, “There is corruption at every level. We urge CBI to probe procurement of supercomputer and a costly Doppler Radar used for prediction of monsoon. CBI must inquire whether all standards were met when the equipment was procured.” Goswami’s cellphone was switched off. A Newsline team was denied permission to enter IITM premises to meet Goswami.
Nayak and Goswami likely focus at IITM seminar today
ReplyDeleteWritten by Manoj Dattatrye More , Sushant Kulkarni | Pune | July 30, 2014 9:46 am
After the recent CBI raid at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, all eyes are likely to be on IITM director B N Goswami and Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) during the seminar on climate at IITM that begins on Wednesday.
Scientists who complain that the atmosphere at IITM has been “vitiated” after the CBI anti-corruption wing raid are likely to seek an audience with Nayak to urge him to put things in order.
IITM is organising a national seminar in Hindi on “Climate change and monsoon variability, prediction and climate services: a scientific approach,” at their Pashan campus on July 30-31. Scientists from across the country will be part of the gathering to discuss issues in Hindi. The two-day seminar is “an effort to promote scientific work and deliberations in Hindi.”
Nayak will be the chief guest while Neeta Choudhary, Secretary, Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs, will be the guest of honour. The two-day seminar will deal with topics related to climate change.
After the CBI raid, IITM top brass maintained silence. Goswami remained out of bounds for the media. Nayak refused to promise anything about an immediate clean-up as demanded by scientists. He merely said once the CBI submits its report, they will initiate action. “Let CBI submit its report, we will act after that…” he had told The Indian Express recently.
Scientists wonder whether Nayak is serious about restoring IITM to its past glory. “If Nayak holds a closed-door meeting, we will reveal what has been going on at IITM for the past few years which has affected quality of research,” said a scientist, whose view was echoed by others.
Among their complaints are that civil and mechanical engineers have been given training in atmospheric science. Technicians have been made scientists, a draughtsman has become a scientist and in the latest, a scientist is to head the accounts department. “Besides, non-Maharashtrians have been given preference in recruitment,” allege scientists seeking a probe. Goswami is to retire on July 31.
The CBI filed cases against three employees, including Chhabi Bardhan. The cases relate to corruption in recruitment. She allegedly functioned at the behest of IITM top brass. Bardhan has been on the run. Her anticipatory bail was rejected by the High Court.
(With inputs from NISHA NAMBIAR)
People says all the property of Dr. B. N. Goswami and Dr. Shailesh Nayak is due to Ms. Chabi Bardhan and hence they are helping her after sealing her property. If it is true it's horrible. if not then it means CBI is not able to seal her all property this is more horrible.
ReplyDeleteBest way do not spoil your carrier in IITM, Pune, It is like suicide and wasting your life, if you want to make your career. SHIJU give thanks to GOD you are saved
sir do they call onlt current gate scorer or previous year score also remains valid
ReplyDeleteplz reply sooon...
Deleteprevious gate qualifiers were called for iitm earlier during my time.but not sure how they will do now.
DeleteThese scams could be a tip of an iceberg. CBI should investigate all the procurements, tenders floated for constructions and services in recent years. Institute should be known for scientific research and not for such corrupt behavior, each and every person involved should be brought to justice. Regarding director, even our ex PM had suffered due to his ministers/colleagues.
ReplyDeleteHi, Really great effort. Everyone must read this article. Thanks for sharing.
