I decided
why not share some experiences with others on my all India mtech tours. I got
inspiration from many sites, but they were all restricted regarding the civil egg.
I write about 2013 mtech experiences.
My journey started when one day I
got email from IIT Kanpur that I got selected for mtech in environmental
department. I just had to give 19000 rs and ensure it. I was very happy; a direct
admission for 548 ranks even in environmental is tough. However, the trick was
that the environmental department is different department in Kanpur and Bombay
unlike other IIT’s where it comes under civil department. So many people didn’t
apply as applying to it meant shelling 400rs more as application fees. Any way I
also had written test for transportation in IIT Kanpur. I thought if
environmental was this easy then transportation is achievable if some hard work
is put. This was my biggest mistake. There is a famous saying ‘don’t count your chicken before they hatch’.
Anyway big story short I didn’t take
environmental and didn’t get transportation. Case closed for IIT Kanpur.
However for benefit of future aspirants I decided give an insight into my
failures.
TRANSPORTATION
·
The
big thing is that total 88 students called for transportation, however people
with structures as first option were also eligible to write .however those with
geotech as first option were not allowed to write transportation.
·
The
transportation had only written paper, so low rankers getting into transportation
had low chance.
·
Written
test included question from Newton’s laws of motion. 10 level physics with
gravity questions all subjective in nature. questions were like
o
DRAW
DISPLACEMENT TIME GRAPH/DISTANCE TIME GRAPH/ACCELERATION TIME GRAPH etc for a
ball thrown from ground with some velocity.
o
Probability
questions like ‘how many hand shake in room of 300 people’.
o
Transportation
core questions like sight distance, various tests and is significance in true
or false form.
o
Maths
questions like draw graph of [ y=x^2 +c],y=ex2 ,y=sinX+cosX etc
RESULT: I
wasn’t selected but only one guy with rank lower than me was selected and rest
of them were with structures as first option i.e. (higher rank than me),
meaning the test had its importance to some level for that one guy.
GEOTECH
Written test had core question as well as
maths and surprise mechanics.
·
Mechanics
questions were those of balls in container which many might have studies in
first year and find the reactions.
·
Geotech
questions were from piles, three phase basics, and shallow foundation terzagi
questions. All subjective and no options. The marks were only for correct
answer and no marks for partial answer.
·
Maths
included basic probability, graphs etc.
Interviews
were concentrated on basic geotech fundamentals like
Difference
between quick sand and quick clay
Casagrande apparatus,
liquid limit graph and different interpretations of it.
Pile
questions
More on maths questions like
Define
probability, random variable; various graphs like step function etc. Definition
of probability and all basic definition can be learnt from Wikipedia.
STRUCTURES
questions were heavy and included all portal frame analysis,
BMD and what not. I will discuss other structure questions in other IITs.
WATER RESOURCE
questions were mainly like
Difference
between hydrograph and hyetograph
Define unit
hydrograph( learn it like hell!)
Difference
in shape of hydrograph when in pavement and grassland
What is y or
d in frode’s equation, different no like frode, renoyld etc.
What’s open
channel, critical depth etc.
Obviously
the maths questions graphs, how to merge sinx+c and cosX+c into one equation.
That was all
for IIT Kanpur. My personal struggle to reach all these places is written in
other post. You can check all IITs interview questions of 2013, under LABELS on your right side.
Hope it
helps. You can comment you doubts or suggestions in comment box below and I can
soon get to you whenever it’s possible.
Shiju, Thankyou again for sharing your experiences. It is good to know the feel of the interview. For the people whoa re interested in applying for GATE 2015, I found a link that might be useful for you. Here it is: http://thegateacademy.com/gate-2015/
ReplyDeleteThank you sir for your nice guidance.i am a final year student of NIT PATNA. i have given gate this year and got AIR 534. my gate score is 737. I have applied in water resources and rock mechanics in iit delhi. However my b.tech grades are not so good and i have a cgpa of 7.8. what should i tell them in interviews regarding grades and does it matters. also how to convince them that i am not joining institute for preparation although i am actually doing it for ies preparation. sir plz reply as soon as possible

ReplyDeletechandan, there are many students like you who want to get into iit d to prepare for ies.it is good that you know what you want.don't bother going to kgp or other iits if you are interested in ies preparation unless you believe you can do it by your self.now how to get in.they will ask you cunningly whether you are interested in other jobs or writing any other exam.tell them no and its not in your mind right now.will they believe you.obviously no.then how to convince them.here comes your interview preparation.prepare very well for interview, study basics questions like definition of unit hydrograph, river training.some interview questions are in this blog itself.they will butter you by telling that you have got good rank then why water resource.find some good excuse.however never tell them that you are planning for a job.tell them that its not in your mind right now and right now you want to focus on mtech.and when you are studying for mtech study considering that it will come in handy if you get in job and be focussed on your preparation.when they ask you about your cgpa, don't invent some bullshit love story and put blame on it.tell them something like "sir,it was my mistake and i realised it in final year and prepared hard for gate exam for good rank".give them some answer that focus on your strength.
DeleteSIR one more question....will you plz tell me that on AIR 534 what will i get in iit kgp...I have given preference as structures, geotech, transportation, environmental, water resources....kindly reply soon

ReplyDeleteHello Sir,it is wonderful to see u helping students and guiding them to sort out their queries.Hats off 2 u.Sir im final year civil student at NIT PATNA and got AIR 391 in gate this year.Im totally focussed on IES prep. And hence want to pursue Mtech frm iitd.I hve given water as my 1st preference there.I m worried that will it be a prblm with my first choice being water although my rank is good. How to convince them.?also hw to assure them tht im nt interestd in job.?Im the branch toppr also in my college with 9.3 cgpa. Will it help? What are my chances of gettin iitd. Also i hve given transp. As my first choice in iit kgp.Do students get time while pursuing mtech in iitkgp for ies prep.&hws transp there and my chances of getting it?Sir pz guide me fr intrvw,Im waitn fr ur reply.Thnks in advance
ReplyDeleteno problem for water resource.you have to find some good excuse for joining water resource program.i don't know whether they will conduct interview for you as i have heard something like those above 8.5 cgpa need not attend interview.as for time required to pursue ies,in any iit you have to squeeze time and kgp is not different.but you may get a bit more free time here.transportation particularly pavement side is extremly good here.you can say irc code is primarily a contribution of iit kgp.but traffic side is weak here and bombay is best for it.as per previous rank, there should not be any problem for you to get here.but here you will have to be self motivated.its not that students from here are not getting in.two of geotech seniors have got in railways.two of our own geotech and structures batchmates have good rank.but preparation here is entirely on your will power.in iit d you have peers, and that might keep you motivated.
ReplyDeletehello friend, thanks for ur guidance. my gate2014 rank is 3284, score 541, im from general category
ReplyDeletemain thing is that i got interview call from iit bombay in remote sensing.
is there any use of attending and is there any chance that i can get through it....waiting for ur help with whole heart
Sir my rank is 391 & i have got shrtlisted fr transp. Engg at iit kanpur.Although u hve provided guidlines fr intrvw prep in ur blog bt i wanted to knw specifically wht to stdy so as to increase my chances of selectn.Only highway is imp or surveying and railways also.On which topics i should concentrate and what is the level of questions asked.Although in mail they hve mentiond tht my candidature for hydraulics will be considered i wanted to knw tht i will be allwd to appr fr other branches also or nly transp&water. And as my first choice is transp. Do they will give my less pref. In water intrvw or selectn will be on merit only. And lastly do they seriously give 70-30 weightage fr gate score & intrvw or is it only in writing.SIR PZ REPLY IM WAITING FOR UR GUIDANCE THANKS IN ADVANCE
