IIT ENVIRONMENTAL OR NIT STRUCTURES?
Now these are the guys who are walking in thin line of
branch or college impasse.
First a reality check- a guy getting iit environmental will
get NIT structures but vice versa not always possible.
M.tech
is definitely about interest and branding. Don’t you love to say that I am an
IItian than a NITian?
Interest-let’s cut the chase and remember how many of us
have chosen civil because they liked it. I guess probably less than
10%.”Structures interests me”, a statement made by at least 70% civil. This is
primarily because of job offers. NIT offers an average of 50% placements to
structures guys. An initially pathetic salary after 4-5 years change and you
may probably go Dubai and be super rich dudes.
Now
what if you don’t get job. If you don’t get job, getting job out campus for
even 20000 rs will be very tough if not impossible. In this case by getting
m.tech will not give any advantage for government jobs as these don’t need
m.tech. Your job prospects reduce as much as 30% in private sector. Hence your
only option will be teaching.
On other hand environmental engineering from iit even if
they get core jobs and work for 10-20 years will never be comparable to
structure guys with same experience. Same is case anywhere in India. So you
must be ready for teaching job or be poor. Many websites tell you that it will
increase 10 fold in coming years but you can never be sure. Till now the
situation is joblessness in core areas. Hence choosing this specialization
should be carefully done with research/teaching and nothing else in mind.
Here is something to cheer. Even if environmental
engineering students don’t get job, there will be classmates from
transportation, geotech and definitely water resources from iits for your
company. Except structures all specialization even in iit has placements
opportunities as low as 40%.
Since
you are getting picture that getting job is easier with b.tech than m.tech
unless its structures. So here is what professors’ advice-if you are planning
to do m.tech you should be at least prepared to teach students. If you abhor
that, take job with b.tech instead.
Still after
reading all these you are not able to answer the question
”iit environmental or nit structures?”
THEN TRY TOSSING A
COIN
Well written. :)
